Athens: The Oracle of Kerameikos. The only ancient oracle of Athens (this site is currently closed, due to reopen summer 2026) In 2012 during some cleaning work on the site, the German Archaeological Institute found that an omphalos was mounted on a marble slab that covered an opening. The following year, the omphalos was raised with a crane to reveal what it had been concealing for thousands of years: a circular well nine meters (30 feet) deep constructed out of semi-cylindrical clay tiles engraved with more than 20 inscriptions of the phrase “ΕΛΘΕ ΜΟΙ Ω ΠΑΙΑΝ ΦΕΡΩΝ ΤΟ ΜΑΝΤEΙΟΝ ΑΛΗΘΕΣ,” which translates to “Come to me, O Paean, and bring with you the true oracle.” Paean was an epithet of Apollo, son of Zeus and brother of Artemis. The repeated phrase was a prayer, an invocation to the deity that he reveal faithful and accurate answers to believers’ questions. The well lies within a sanctuary dedicated to Apollo and Artemis.
Guest faciliatators: Magic Prof. Emily Selove and Psychedelic Prof. David Luke are back, and our marvellous mutual friend Dr. Sam Gandy will be joining us for the first time. Sam is an ecologist, biophile, and psychedelic researcher specialising in how altered states influence our experience of nature connection. Arielle Guttman, Mythic Astrologer, author, tour leader, and the creator of the Venus Star Point system is also joining us for a third time and as well as presenting on the astromyth of the oracles, Arielle and I shall be plotting together for some Planetary Hours dreamworking sessions. Also coming along is Maria Christofi, sound, bodyworker, and acupoint therapist. We shall of course also be meeting with Epidavrian Asklepiade Eleftherios Makridopoulos at his alchemical laboratory near the ancient sanctuary too.
Sites we shall visit:
Loutra Edipsou, Evia: The hot springs of Edipsos are mentioned in ancient texts written by Aristotle, Strabo, and Plutarch. The Roman emperors Hadrian, Septimius Severus, and Marcus Aurelius were known to frequent the baths. Thermal springs are frequently related to Hades and believed to be both portal to the underworld and site of healing. The mythological origin story of these springs is that they were created by Athens to heal a wounded Herakles.
Dodoni: The Oracle of Zeus, oracular consulting was given through the interpreting of the rustling of oak-leaves, or of the cooing of doves (peleiai), of the flight of birds nesting in the oak trees, as of the murmuring of the waters from the sacred spring or of the clanking of brazen vessels which were hung on the branches of the oak-trees. The oracle here was said to be connected to an ancient oracle in Egyptian Thebes. Two doves flew from either the Siwan Oasis, or the temple complex at Karnak, one went to Libya and established the oracle of Ammon Zeus there and the other landed in an oak tree in Dodoni and began speaking in a human voice.
Necromanteion of Acheron (a river in the Epirus region of northwest Greece): Use of the Necromanteion involved elaborate ceremonies wherein celebrants seeking to speak to the dead would start by gathering in a ziggurat-like temple and consuming a meal of broad beans, pork, barley bread, oysters, and some sort of narcotic compound (probably opium). Following a purification ceremony and the sacrifice of sheep, the faithful would descend through a series of underground meandering corridors, leaving offerings as they passed through a number of iron gates. The Nekromanteia would pose a series of questions and chant prayers and the celebrants would then witness the priest rise from the floor and begin to fly through the temple assisted by theatrical cranes.
Patras: The spring of Demeter in Patras, also the site of the oracle of Demeter, today it is the holy spring of Agios Andreas. The oracle was tied to a sacred spring located next to the temple. To divine the future—a mirror was lowered into the spring on a cord. Upon looking into the submerged mirror, the seeker would be shown a true, infallible reflection of the person in question, revealing either their health and survival or their fate.
Delphi: The most famous oracle site in perhaps all of the world. On the slopes of the great Mount Parnassos is the Sanctuary of Apollo, and the omphalos - navel of the world. Here the Pythia (high Priestess of Apollo) was sought out by leaders, artists, and royalty. This is the place where dreamers tend to get the most vivid dreams.
Livadeia: Oracle of Trophonios - the Cave of Nightmares in Boetia.
Epidavros: Home to Epidavros and the local nymphs who preside over oracular springs.
Eleusis: Sanctuary of Demeter and Kore at Elefsina - where the Mysteries of Elefsis took place.
