A common dream recorded in ancient Egypt - alongside teeth falling out, drowning in the Nile, sex with mother.

Recorded in the prognostic dreambook of the scribe Qenherkhepshef - currently kept in the archives of the British Museum - this dream is recognised as an auspicious omen that you will gain power and influence over your fellows. This dream also worked its way into the Greco-Roman Oneirocritica of Artemidorus (the ancient precursor to Sigmund Freud's Interpretation of Dreams).

Usually translated as leopard, but the same word ꜣby/ꜣbyt (aby or abyt-female) is also used for cheetah, and to describe any large, long-bodied, spotted cat.

In ancient Egypt the spotted pelt of big cats is associated with the starry heavens, the predynastic divine protectress Mafdet - a cheetah-headed goddess presiding over legal justice, swift punishment for wrongdoing, and defence against the venom of snakes and scorpions. The pelts were worn by priestly classes and pharaohs, to indicate divine authority.
