Disease, Disability and Healthcare in Ancient Egypt

Palaeopathology is contributing enormously to our understanding of diseases in the ancient world. Many we thought of as modern inflictions have been detected in mummies and skeletal remains recovered from sites around Egypt. In this talk we will be looking at diseases such as tuberculosis, sand pneumoconiosis, leprosy, bubonic plague, poliomyelitis, atherosclerosis, schistosomiasis and even cancer. Injuries caused through interpersonal violence, battle wounds and occupational injuries will be investigated. We will also look at disability in ancient Egypt; how it was conceptualised and what type of treatment if any was offered. We will be taking a journey into the fascinating world of the ancient Egyptian practitioners and their healthcare system to explore their understanding of diseases and the efficacy of their treatments.

You can also pay £5 via PayPal using the address: sarah@awakeandaway.co.uk // with ref: Sofia Aziz HEALTH
