Archaia Epidavros

Dream Mysteries is based in Archaia Epidavros, an absolutely beautiful, dreamy seaside town a couple of hours south of Athens on the Argolid Peninsula.

Epidavros was once an affluent Greco-Roman hub of culture and trade, and from here a Sacred Way led pilgrims to the healing Sanctuary of Asklepios.

In 258 BC a volcano on the Methana Peninsula erupted and flooded most of the ancient harbour. During the retreat, you will be able to swim over what remains of this Sunken City (the structures are about 1.5 meters underwater in places, so it is very easy to swim over and around from the beach). Here you will see wonderfully preserved rooms, floors and steps, giant wine and oil amphora. The Saronic Gulf is a tranquil body of water alive with many fish, sea urchins and - if you’re lucky - you might see short-beaked common dolphins and loggerhead turtles from the nearby turtle sanctuary on the island of Aegina.

The main attraction at Epidavros is the Sanctuary of Asklepios, which is just a few km down the road. In ancient times, this sanctuary was a holistic healing complex dedicated to the gods Apollo, Asklepios and their divine family. In Greco-Roman times Apollo, Asklepios and Hygieia were syncretised with Osiris, Horus and Isis. Epidavros was considered by some to be the birthplace of the god Asklepios, the divine physician, who appeared to pilgrims in dreams and invited them to come and be licked by serpents in his famous magico-medical facilities. The dream power is still strong in these lands, and if you spend too long here, you might just find all of your dreams coming true!
