SACRED PERFUME OF HATHOR - EXPERIMENTAL ARCHAEOLOGY SCENT WORKSHOP ONLINE WITH DORA GOLDSMITH

ONLINE WORKSHOP about Hathor’s ti-Sps perfume. This is a brand-new workshop on an ancient Egyptian perfume recipe Dora recently discovered and translated. This recipe has been overlooked by Egyptologists and no translation or comprehensive study has ever been published about it. Dora will walk you through the recipe step-by-step and teach you how to reconstruct it.

What is ti-Sps?

The laboratory of the temple of Edfu from the Ptolemaic period is inscribed with the recipe of a perfume called ti-Sps (pronounced likely “ti-shepes”). The inscription notes that it is the perfume of the goddess Hathor: “perfume for Hathor, lady of Dendera”. The beginning of the recipe informs us that the manufactured product is used to anoint the body of the goddess, thus it was a sacred scent for rituals: “Instructions for making this ti-Sps perfume of best quality of styrax: 1 hin to anoint the Golden One (Hathor)”.

What are we going to do?

The workshop will take three hours. We will start the class by reading the recipe. Then we will look at all eight ingredients of the recipe in detail and discuss their botanical identification and cultural significance for ancient Egyptian society. After we have familiarized ourselves with each ingredient, we will read the recipe again to analyze each step of the perfume-making process. We will also look at the structure of the text and its genre as a recipe. After we have understood all the steps of the recipe, I will teach you ways of recreating this ancient perfume by yourself. The last hour is reserved for Q&A.
