ABOUT THE TALK
Life for the ancient Egyptians was full of signs and messages to decipher, which would allow them to have an insight into their own future. This is why, over the centuries and millennia, ancient Egyptian culture developed and practiced an impressive number of divinatory arts. Dream interpretation played a key role, but so did astrology and the casting of horoscopes. Other techniques included so-called lecanomancy (or ‘bowl-divination’), the interpretation of meteorological events like thunder, terrestrial omina (including the study of the behaviour of animals and their interactions with humans), the rolling of dice, and many more.
What would happen to someone who had been born when Venus was in the Ascendant? Or what about the fate of a woman, if a gecko fell from the ceiling of her house onto her right breast? And what to make of a “rain of frogs”?
This talk will explore these lesser-known aspects of ancient Egyptian life, presenting and discussing passages from original texts, several of which are still unpublished and unavailable to the public. We will eventually try to answer the question why the ancient Egyptians relied so much on divination in navigating their daily existence.
