CLEOPATRA: TOMB, BATHS and BIRTH-HOUSE (and other lost monuments)
Cleopatra is perhaps one of most famous figures in the ancient world and yet little of what we know about her comes from archaeological evidence in Egypt. The story of her final days is well know and classical accounts tell us a little of her tomb and where it was, but it has never been found. She created a myth that she was Isis and her son, Horus – to help establish their legitimacy – and yet these crucially important scenes were lost over a century ago. Famously she bathed in milk and yet the ‘baths of Cleopatra’ which were a must-see for 19th Century travellers have now disappeared. What happened, and how can Egyptologists’ records help us to retrieve what has been lost?

£5 with Ref: Paul Harrison
Join The Explorers Club for a fireside chat with Egyptologist Dr. Paul Harrison about faith and belief in Ancient Egypt.
How did religious belief, faith and piety develop, deteriorate and evolve within this culture? Did Ancient Egyptian people believe in the physical reality of their gods at times and not others? How was religion used for political gain?
This meeting will take the form of a Q+A so please do think of some questions to ask our guest.
About Paul Harrison :
Paul gained a PhD from UCL in Egyptian archaeology in 2012. His work explores the touch-points between the ancient world and the modern, with particular reference to religious practices and beliefs, the esoteric, ancient iconography, and the political power matrices of past and present.
He has appeared on the History Channel in the global release, 'Ancient Top Ten', as an expert on Sky News, and was the writer and presenter for SEGA's Total War mini-documentary series.
Paul’s book, Profane Egyptologists, explores the modern phenomenon of Kemeticism (the revival and reconstruction of ancient Egyptian religion). It was published by Routledge and UCL in 2017.
